Organized firefighting began in 1862, when the Monitor No. 1 Fire Company was formed in South Wolfeboro. The Town of Wolfeboro followed by establishing a Village Fire Precinct in 1866, beginning with the Carroll Engine Company, near Pickering Corner. Both Companies purchased used hand pumpers, which were followed to the fire site by two-wheel hose wagons. Manpower pulled the equipment to the fire. These early equipments were mostly obsoleted by the 1920's, when motorized equipment allowed a centralized fire station to cover the entire town. In 1981, WHS volunteers restored two pumpers and two hose wagons, now on display at the Firehouse. Also on display is a late 1800's horse-drawn Amoskeag Fire Engine, which used steam boilers instead of manpower. Many items related to firefighting are also on exhibit.
