On Jan. 9, a group of doctors met to discuss the unsatisfactory situation of doing major surgery in private residences. This led to fund-raising & purchase of the former Rev. Theodore C. Jerome's homestead on South Main St. with a 2-story house & 14 acres (now the site of Kingswood High School). There is a stone marker in the woods between the school driveway & the golf course. The house was remodeled & opened as a 12-bed facility on Jan. 1, 1908. First called Huggins Sanitarium, later Huggins Hospital, the building was replaced in 1924 with a 24-bed building on the location used today. The original building collapsed in 1935. The new building was expanded to 66 beds in 1950, and remained in that configuration until a major redesign in 2010.
