This site on South Main Street, between the bridge and the Avery Building, has had an early history of trouble. The original three story building with a mansard roof, built in the 1860's, was destroyed in a massive fire in 1899. A one story building was erected in late 1899, and is shown in this 1908 card after it burned down. Does seem rather morbid to make a postcard of a disaster. The replacement building, of similar size and shape, was built in 1909 and still stands today.
