Here is the text of two early documents regarding non-payment of debts, such as moneys owed for groceries, seeds, blacksmith services, etc. A somewhat self-defeating situation is obvious; if a farmer can't pay his bills and the sheriff takes away his oxen, he will be even less able to produce a cash crop.
