The Eastern Railroad began service to Wolfeboro in 1872. The 12 mile line connected to an existing line in Sanbornville, with 12 stops in that short distance. The connection was instrumental in the expansion of Wolfeboro as a tourist destination, replacing stagecoaches and horse & buggy, or ships across the lake, as the only means of access. There was also an advantage in shipping factory goods. The line became Boston & Maine RR in 1892. Decline in the 1900's, caused by cars and trucks, led to discontinuance of passenger service in 1936. Freight continued a bit longer. The railroad was revived as a tourist train in the early 1970's and ran into the early 1980's.
