MV Mount Washington II

The Mount Washington II (the "II" is only to distinguish from Mount Washington "I", postcards that use "II" are incorrect) was launched on Lake Winnipesaukee in 1940. It has a fascinating history, built in New Jersey about 1880, later moved in sections on railway cars to Vermont, reassembled and used on Lake Champlain, under the name Chateaugay. In 1925, it was cut down for use as a car ferry. In 1936, the engine was removed and the ship was used as a clubhouse for the Burlington, VT, Yacht Club. Bought by a noted Wolfeboro Captain. the ship was again cut into sections and travelled by rail to Lakeport for rebuilding and adding engines. Many modifications have been made since, including replacement engines when the 1940 engines were requisitioned and lost in WWII. See Bowers History of Wolfeboro, Vol. II, for more details.
