The Mount Washington (the "I" is used only to distinguish the ship from Mount Washington "II") was 178' long with a 42' beam and could accommodate 1200 passengers. Built and owned by the Boston & Maine Railroad, it began operations, for passengers and freight, in 1872, with a regular schedule including Wolfeboro, Center Harbor and Alton Bay. Other ports were later added. The arrival of the automobile affected business, and the ship was sold in 1922 to be used primarily for tourism. Operation became sporadic in the 1930's and the ship was destroyed in a fire at the Weirs in 1939.
