The early district schoolhouses provided only an elementary education. Recognizing the need for advanced education, the Wolfeborough and Tuftonborough Academy was built and opened in September 1821, on the site of the present Town Hall. It served as a High School until 1890, when it was moved to a site behind the right side of the later Carpenter School, remodeled and named the Pickering School. High School education was then provided by Brewster Free Academy. The Pickering School provided elementary education until replaced by the Carpenter School, which opened in 1925.
