March/April 1953. High water, looking from dockside at the Main St. bridge to Back Bay. The passage is obviously not passable for any vessel. The water reached about a foot from the bridge arch and basements of local businesses were flooded. This scene has been repeated several times over the years, but this is one of the worst. This was a man-made disaster as Public Service of New Hampshire kept lake levels artificially high by damming the outlet to prevent downstream flooding.
