South Main St. buildings across from today's Post Office in June 1903. Left is William Roger's Meat Market, center is Dr. Thompson's Pharmacy, and the small building on the right is Kalloch's Confectionery & Ice Cream Parlor, which was also the office of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. The Pharmacy mortar & pestle above the Pharmacy door was illuminated. Signs in the window advertised soda and Moxie (5 signs show it was quite popular). On the right is the Town Liberty Pole, a prominent landmark for many years. Over 100 feet tall, the pole was a gathering spot for speeches and special announcements. The Pharmacy, considerable remodeled, is now the Downtown Grill. The corner was rebuilt as a new 2-story structure in 1994.
